Why Blood Sugar Balance Matters (Even If You Don’t Have Diabetes)

A series of smaller rocks balanced on a larger rock

When most people think about blood sugar, they think about diabetes or cutting sugar out of their diet. But balanced blood sugar is about so much more than that — especially for women in their 30s, 40s and beyond.

Blood sugar balance is one of the most powerful ways we can support hormone function, mental clarity, and daily energy levels. And it doesn’t require rigid rules or eliminating entire food groups.

Why Blood Sugar Matters for Hormones

Insulin — the hormone that helps your body use glucose from food — is deeply connected to other key hormones like oestrogen, progesterone and cortisol. When your blood sugar spikes and crashes, it places pressure on your endocrine system. This can lead to more intense PMS symptoms, worsened perimenopausal changes, and extra stress on your nervous system.

Blood Sugar and Mood

Have you ever felt shaky, flat or irritable when you’ve gone too long without eating? Or had that wired-but-tired feeling that makes you anxious but exhausted? Those are often signs of a blood sugar dip. These crashes can trigger a release of cortisol and adrenaline, which affects your mood, energy, and sleep — and can feel a lot like anxiety.

The goal isn’t to avoid all carbohydrates — it’s to help your body use them efficiently and steadily. Here are some practical strategies that help:

• Build meals around protein and fibre — this slows glucose absorption and keeps you fuller for longer.

• Eat regularly — especially if you’re busy, stressed or in perimenopause.

• Start meals with veggies or salad, and consider a splash of vinegar or herbal bitters before eating.

• If you enjoy sweet foods, have them after a balanced meal rather than on their own.

• Move your body after meals — even a short walk supports healthy glucose clearance.

You don’t have to be perfect. Even a few small changes to how you eat and move can make a big difference in how you feel. If you’ve been experiencing mood swings, energy crashes, or intense cravings, addressing blood sugar balance might be the missing piece of the puzzle.
